This isn’t a screed against genetic engineering or science in general, even though James Franco’s researcher does do some unethical things in the course of his work into diseases of the brain and drug therapies that might cure them. The black-and-white I figured I was in for isn’t here at all. Because there’s a simple joy to be had in merely discovering that there is still room for something more, even in a summer blockbuster primarily designed to appeal to popcorn crowds.

Even the ones that happen in the opening scenes of the film. This Apes is so much not what I was anticipating - either from the trailer or from my general awareness of how Hollywood loves to remove genuine emotion and honest morality from anything it touches - that I hesitate to reveal even the least spoilerish moments of it. Jokiness and hokeyness have been genetically engineered away, leaving something pure and sweet and poignant, a throwback to the humanist science fiction of the late 1960s and early 1970s. But if the legacy Roddy McDowall in a monkey suit has left us with is one of goofy catchphrases and cheesy human bondage, there is nary a bit of snark here. Oh, it nods to the past, to its B-movie progenitors, and gets a laugh here and a snort of recognition there from that. You may not believe how unaffectedly sincere Rise of the Planet of the Apes is. What you may not believe is how much this unexpectedly lovely movie is about this: Can we get a sequel to A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting? Now that would be some Halloween treat. You will believe apes will rise. Truly, Felton has some range when it comes to movies, and I, for one, can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. The movie ended up becoming number one on Netflix at the time of its release, so you know that at the very least, everyone else loved it too. The movie itself is really interesting to watch, as well, featuring many Dutch actors who rock it in their roles and help carry this film until the very end. Tom Felton plays Tony Turner in The Forgotten Battle, and while his appearance wasn’t that long compared to many of the others in this movie, it’s remembered for his moments with his men, and the sacrifices that they make to try and get back to them. This fascinating war movie tells the story of the Battle of the Scheldt in World War 2, and how the lives of three people with intersecting lives, who never would have met before, collide and have to come together to fight for the freedom of the world. Last but not least, we have The Forgotten Battle. (Image credit: Levitate Film) The Forgotten Battle (2020)
